Beijing Has BMX in List

The most awaited sporting event this year- The Beijing Olympics- includes BMX in its lineup of competitions. Going a bit further diverse from its set of conventional choice in sports and games, the World Olympics is targeting activities that appeal to today’s younger generation.
BMX in Beijing: What discipline?

After getting thrilled with the idea that the Olympics is finally acknowledging mountain biking, the next question of every BMX aficionado is: In what discipline? Unsurprisingly, there are many bets.

A top choice of many BMX pros is downhill racing. The preference lies in the fact that such discipline requires expert experience as a BMX rider. It is also much more challenging and, “more spectacular to watch.” However, downhill riding seems to be a very unusual selection since it entails too much “carnage” that is usually avoided in the traditional Olympics.

Freestyle BMX riding also seems to be popular pick for many bike riders. However, many recognize the fact that if freestyle will be the choice, riders will have to adhere with strict rules in the same way that Olympic figure skating does. Protesting such idea, many riders point out that such stringency will definitely not work for BMX riders.

As such, most riders are then left with one discipline in mind – the traditional BMX racing on a regular track.

Johan Lindstorm, BMX coordinator of the International Cycling Union (UCI), said that their proposed discipline was traditional BMX racing. The said competition will have men’s and women’s division that will replace two of the usual track cycling events that were yet to be announced.

Lindstorm states that all the prospective contenders should be at least nineteen years old. He also explains that the game will cater to a limited number of contestants around the globe. In his estimate, the total number of contenders will be within the range fifty to a hundred. However, he noted that the number of representatives for every national team will vary, depending on the noted success and achievements of each.
