BMX Racing Gets Nod In 2008 Summer Olympics

It cannot be denied that BMX racing is still a popular extreme sport among teenagers in many parts of the world today. This is a big reality even with the existence of a lot of extreme sports these days that offer great thrills and fun.

The great news is that BMX racing will be included for the first time as a medal sport at the 2008 Summer Olympics set to be held in Beijing, China. The competition is sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI) which is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the U.S., the National Bicycle League and the American Bicycle Association (ABA) are the groups that oversee BMX competitions.

These sanctioning bodies formulate the rules that serve as guidelines in the conduct of BMX races. They also decide what age group should take part, what skill levels for the competitions should be involved and the points system to be used. Young kids aged 9 to 10 are those who actively take part in the lower age group level while those aged 18 to 21 compete in the professional ranks.

BMX racing is very similar to motocross racing in that tracks with jumps, bumps and berms are involved. Two types of BMX bikes are used, the regular 20-inch and the 24-inch cruiser, the 24 inch referring to the wheels. Competitions usually feature several qualifying races and winners from each category advance into the semi-finals and then into the finals.

As in any action sport, technique plays a big part. With this comes skill and power. Of course, it’s natural to be nervous at the start but a competing rider should muster up enough confidence to show a good performance. At the beginning of the race, a quick start or the so-called snap is crucial.

BMX racing has attracted thrill and adventure seekers for a long time now. For a family who likes to be active while at the same time having fun, this sport is a great way to bond. If not all riders, some family members can act as coach, cheer leaders or mechanics. The same is true for friends.
