Dakine History: 'Dakine' comes from the Hawaiian word "da kine" meaning "the kind" or "the best". The company was founded in 1979 in Maui, Hawaii when Rob Kaplan began manufacturing the "Da Kine" Leash - a leash capable of pulling a car, setting DaKine's standard for innovative thinking and high quality. Throughout the early 80's, Dakine became an industry leader in surf bags and surf accessories.
In 1986, Dakine opened its North American warehouse, manufacturing facility and office in Hood River, Oregon, which the company uses as a base to this day. The company committed itself to the Snowboarding market in 1989 producing snowboard bags, snowboard luggage, snowboard gloves and accessories. Dakine built an impressive list of innovative products throughout the 90's and by 1999, had expanded into skateboarding with the first skateboarding specific backpack.
Dakine celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2009 and have continued to develop groundbreaking products throughout action sports, building on their reputation for high quality and innovation.
