Jon Comer is the first professional skateboarder with an unlikely condition- he has a prosthetic limb. He has started skating since he was ten and the moment he tried doing it, he knew that skating will be his lifetime hobby. Despite being a below-the-knee amputee, that didn’t stop him for being good at his sport. Instead, he has used the condition as a supreme motivation to keep on going.
Unlike most skateboarders who have two biological legs that they can use to feel and control the board, Comer does differently. He bases his flips and balance on his instinct and visual checks on his footing. He regains controls on the board through his prosthetics. However, despite the complexity of his skateboarding process, Comer does have a lot of astounding tricks that most regular skateboarders can’t even try. Indeed, Comer’s inclination to the sport is a little bit more risky that those of his fellow professionals. However, this just proves that he is a bit tougher than most skaters as well.
Comer’s condition does not hinder him from skateboarding nor does it prevent him from continuously bagging awards. Before he can even turn pro, Comer already came home with the gold medal for the Tampa Am. Soon after he became a pro in 1998, he started competing for more local and foreign games. Among his most distinguished victories was when he bagged the bronze at the Velocity Games in the summer of 2005. He has also participated in the Van’s Warped Tour for almost a decade now. Comer was also a guest on the Tony Hawk Gigantic Skate park tour, as well as the GT Bicycle Air Show Tour.
Other than participating in various competitions, Comer does a lot of traveling around the country not only in search of new tricks but to advocate skating among kids who hesitate in pursuing their dream.
