APT World Cup Bagged by Abberton and Hipwood

The well-known APT Tow-in is one of the events to look out for every year, with competitors coming in from known regions of the world, this event is marked in all the calendars of professional surfers, as well as fans. The event itself had waited for gigantic swells before it was initiated. The result: twelve to fifteen foot swells, solid as walls of brick, cutting through the steely surface of the ocean.

The competition had been completed with the participation of key players in professional surfing in the past decades: the United States, Brazil and even South Africa. The well-trained athletes braved the long flights from their countries to challenge the largest swells known to be safely surfed using a board with a human balancing on top.

The crowd was huge in this year’s competition, which made the competition matter more: the athletes felt that they have to make the day worth coming to.

The day proved to be a success- the weather cooperated (the climate did, too) as regular swells rolled in to test if the competitors weren’t just kidding around with their boards. The competition ended with a pair of Australians taking the Cup: Kobby Abberton, with partner-in-crime, Ryan Hipwood.

Surfing for these two proved to be more than just a game- it was entertainment, it was passion and it was their life rolled into one. Abberton stated that he enjoyed the day- because everyone was cheering and the surfers were getting pounded by the swells but they kept coming back- a sure sign of the true love of the sport.
